Marlin Caught In Philippines Reveals Strange “Tattoos” And It’s Mind Boggling AF

Filipino fishermen recently got quite the shock when they discovered a mystical coat-of- arms and leaf pattern adorning the skin of a blue marlin aboard their vessel. The pictures were posted on the GMA News Facebook page, and commenters speculated everything from scientific marking, to “fish prison”, to downright extra-terrestrial or divine intervention. Some fishermen and scientists argued that the design could have been imprinted on the marlin’s skin by marine debris, like clothing or a plastic bag.

But what really “inked” this open-ocean sea creature? Amid the hullaballoo and conspiracy theories, people forgot to ask the fisherman himself what happened. Zosimo Tano reeled in the 52-pound fish, then covered the fish with his shirt. What did his shirt have on it? You guessed it, a coat-of-arms and leaf pattern on it.

Tano had no idea his catch went viral until a couple of days after the fishing trip. He sold the fish, his only catch of the day, at market later that same afternoon.

This fishy phenomenon likely occurred because of blue marlin’s fin-tastic ability to change color. Sections of its skin can change from navy to bright blue in a split second, a tactic often used to stun prey or snag a significant other. Any college students in need of a research topic, be sure to snatch this one up!
